Why Central India, and not just Ranthambore?
Most first-time visitors book one wildlife stop — usually Ranthambore, because it sits closest to the Golden Triangle. It's a reasonable default and a perfectly good park. But it's a default, not necessarily the best one. Here's the comparison we'd want if we were planning this trip ourselves.

Ranthambore's reputation rests on proximity, not on outperforming Central India's reserves. Once you weigh in density, crowding and cost, the case for the extra flight gets a lot stronger.

The density gap matters more than it looks on paper. A near-doubling of tigers per square kilometre, spread across three reserves instead of one, is the difference between one tense, crowded sighting and several unhurried ones.

Only have three days? Cut Day 11's reserve change and stay in Pench, or fly directly into Bandhavgarh territory via Jabalpur instead — we'll route it around whichever days you can actually spare.
Why Nagpur is the gateway
Nagpur calls itself the Zero Mile City — a sandstone marker near the city centre has, since British survey days, been treated as the geographic midpoint of India. That's more than trivia: it's why the city ended up as the country's aviation and rail crossroads, and why it now sits within easy reach of six major tiger reserves across Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
In practice that means a straightforward domestic hop, not a direct flight from abroad — Nagpur has no scheduled international service. You'll connect through Delhi or Mumbai, both roughly 1.5 hours away by air, which is exactly the leg most Golden Triangle itineraries already have booked as their exit flight. From Nagpur, it's a 2-to-5-hour road transfer into whichever reserve you're headed for.

None of this makes Ranthambore a bad choice — it remains a strong park with real history. It simply isn't the ceiling. If tiger sightings are the point of the trip, the data says look further west.
Questions worth asking first
Is Ranthambore still worth visiting?
Yes — it’s a genuinely good park, and if it’s the only wildlife stop on your trip, go. Our argument isn’t "skip it," it’s "don’t assume it’s the only option." If you have even three extra days, Central India gets you calmer safaris and comparable or better tiger odds for a similar daily spend.
How many extra days do I really need?
Three days is the practical minimum — enough for transit plus two full safari days in one park. Five days lets you cover two reserves, like the Pench-to-Kanha route above, and meaningfully raises your sighting odds without turning the trip into a second holiday.
Can I get to Central India by train instead of flying?
You can — Nagpur is well connected by rail to Delhi, Agra and Jaipur — but journeys run 12–18 hours. Most guests on a Golden Triangle add-on prefer the 1.5-hour flight to Nagpur and save the train time for the safaris themselves.
Which single park should I add if I only have 3 days?
Bandhavgarh or Tadoba, if sightings are the priority — both post the highest success rates in our records. Pench is the easiest logistically, being closest to Nagpur, and suits families or a shorter connection window.
Is Central India noticeably cheaper than Ranthambore, or about the same?
Broadly comparable per safari once you account for permits and lodging — the real saving is in avoided crowding and repeat drives. Guests often need fewer safaris here to get a strong sighting, which brings the total trip cost down.
