DESTINATION

Umred Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary

Nagpur & Bhandara districts, Maharashtra

The closest wild tiger habitat to Nagpur itself, Umred Karhandla became a serious destination after a well-known tigress and her cubs settled the area in the 2010s. It's the easiest reserve to slot into a short layover before or after a flight.

Plan a safari here
Can I do this as a half-day trip from Nagpur?

Yes — it's close enough for a single safari before or after a flight, though we'd still recommend two if your schedule allows it.

Which gate has the best odds — Umred, Karhandla or Pawani?

Karhandla Gate is where the famous tigress and her litters settled and remains the strongest for sightings; Umred and Pawani see fewer vehicles if you'd rather trade some odds for a quieter drive.

Is this reserve open every day of the week?

Yes, it runs daily like our other reserves — there's no weekly closure day here, only the standard July–September monsoon closure.

Can I combine this with a Nagpur city stay?

Very easily — it's the closest wild tiger habitat to Nagpur, so we regularly bookend a city stopover with a morning or evening safari here.

Do I need to book far in advance for such a small reserve?

Yes — its compact size means an even smaller daily vehicle quota than most of our other parks. We'd recommend booking at least two to three weeks out, more in peak season.
